Daniel Murphy Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 (edited) Here is a piece I picked up a few years ago, upon cleaning the rust from it yesterday I found an engraved inscription. It has an aluminum fuze with a brass tip and a copper driving band and appears to have been fired. It is definitely unusual and measures 20mm X 82mm. Dan Edited November 30, 2006 by Daniel Murphy
Daniel Murphy Posted November 30, 2006 Author Posted November 30, 2006 The upper part is engraved "Souvenir de Lorraine". I assume that is the region of France, not his girlfriend.
Daniel Murphy Posted November 30, 2006 Author Posted November 30, 2006 The lower part is engraved "France 1918".
Daniel Murphy Posted November 30, 2006 Author Posted November 30, 2006 On the other side is the owners initials in a wreath. I have no idea who engraved this, but he was no doubt well trained.
Daniel Murphy Posted November 30, 2006 Author Posted November 30, 2006 (edited) Oh yea, one more thing. I DID say it was trench art. When I said it appeared to have been fired , does a thumbwheel and flint count?Dan Edited November 30, 2006 by Daniel Murphy
mustang Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 now thats nice, dont collect trench art myself although it sometimes passes my hands,i like this though, the engraving is great, and stuff like this always gets my imagination going, who was he and who was it for if given as present. not only that but on few shillings per week, how much did these cost originally for a guy to spend on this.
