hi,need help with sword tang markings please,

im sure they used just coloured glass,but the pink eyes do ,look nice. ,but on special custom edged weapons then,ivory grips,rubbies and even diamonds used........but on exceptional pieces only.

i have a rare bit of paper dated 1844 that shows captain and second lietenant uniforms as officers of kriegskorvette amazone.both wear hirschfangers in frog type suspension and adorn officers portapees, so can any naval experts out there please tell me ranks between second lieutenant and cadets in prussian navy circa 1844. any ideas gents ?

thats one point id never thought of (sorry about play on words),ive never looked at mine and compared blade to scabbord length and looked at other pics to compare theirs. guess all blades would have been made pointed then shortened and ground round for cadets,maybe more points (?) to officers and cadets amazone`s. will check my references,thanks for bringing this up. as the amazone sunk with all hands lost i guess these dirks were from previous crew or left at shore for dress purposes,if they were kept on board i guess the largest proportion of what were ever made are at the bottom of the north sea

haven`t the two stefanski brothers written a reference work on navy daggers,not seen it myself,i believe one is expert on luftwaffe edged weapons while his brother is expert on navy dirks. looking at blade still cautious book at www.naval-military-press.com title OFFICER SWORDS OF THE GERMAN NAVY 1806-1945 review Finally, a thorough work on the swords worn by German naval officers and non-commissioned officers from 1806-1945.The authors, both experienced collectors, have extensively researched in archives and numerous public and private collections.Thus they can, among other things correct statements about the legendary "Furstenberg Swords", add new informtion on the various types, also provide a list of the wearers of honorary swords from the days of the Imperial Navy, the Reichs- and Kriegsmarine.This impressive book includes more than 250 images showing the weapons and their wearers. ok its swords,not dirks but surely they must have knowledge of such still this blade has head scratchy probs with me,damast pattern . dont wanna go either way yet,still sitting on fence ,but the fittings and grip are great,makers mark ????,some have said in past are period...some not. i would have preffered to see on a maidenhair pattern. inscription i have seen on a few different types of blades of different styles/groups.......im sure its a quote of somebody like napoleon and was used different sectors of service.some ok some not. still after saying all this.???????????????? sorry to confuse matters more

sorry,no idea,dont suppose theres any markings well hidden on the snap fastener at all,sometimes a maker/country under rust......sorry if you`ve already thought of this. mustang

hi, how did the ferrule come off,does the sword strip or has the ferrule split and come off?. could be difficult fitting a replacement if you found one if the grip does not remove,maybe buy /make one,split in half /refix and join,although id probably leave as is myself.sometimes grips remove ok ,sometimes open a can of worms,then need new fixings to refit grip. mustang

now thats nice, dont collect trench art myself although it sometimes passes my hands,i like this though,the engraving is great,and stuff like this always gets my imagination going,who was he and who was it for if given as present. not only that but on few shillings per week,how much did these cost originally for a guy to spend on this.

what a great subject,been around ammo ever since a kid (until british gov. decided to put restrictions in place ),used allsorts of stuff including hollowpoint and modified rounds against test targets (never a living thing,just one of my personnal things). but saying all this i never knew where the term dum dum came from, this is great info i`ll try and store in the grey cells. just goes to prove this is going to be a great forum for newbie me. thanks all

Hi all,just joined the forum and look forward to future on here. Thought i`d start with a few pics of my amazone,authenticated by Mr.Wittmann,its different in a couple of ways to the other handful of known examples........the blade tip is pointed,maybe officers model,and the suspension method is not two scabbord rings for cords,it is a lug in centre of scabbord for a `frog` type device,similar to navy hirschfangers of the time. no signs of alterations been done at all,very original fitting.
