Tiger-pie Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 (edited) G'da DarrellI have a few questions as I know next to nothing about American awards. The Purple Heart, love that frosted gold finish BTW, is the purple heart shaped middle piece enamel or glass?.Why aren't all high level medals named? Are the medals with a serial number attributed to a recipient using that serial number for records?OK, I know that despite the fact that movies are in colour, they ain't necessarily true, but it appears that sometimes medals are awarded off the cuff. If so, how do they track who is awarded what, it seems that you could award yourself whatever you wanted? I'm sure that is not the case though, an example might be when they pin a medal on in the field or going around a hospital with a bag of Purple Hearts and pinning them onto wounded personnels pillows. Tiger-pie Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 I extracted the digit and did a bit of research, see link below for construction, older medals use enamel and new types use plastic purple centres.Regards;Johnsyhttp://www.purplehearts.net/id6.html
