Any info about maker Rothe in Vienna

    Recommended Posts

    Hello all,

I found a maker mark on a Brazilian imperial award...the mark is a symbol (?) and Rothe. Another mark says "Wien".

I learned from medalnet that he?s also was one of the Order of the Rose makers...

Can anyone tell me something else about this maker? I found a 1922 award with his mark - but he?s not in any III Reich list...

    Kind regards,

    Ricardo

They were one of the major -- if not THE major -- Austrian manufacturer of high-end high-quality orders, both European and global. I think they are still in the trade these days?

The only real problem is that they were one of those to continue manufacturing pre-1918 orders of non-existent States into the inter-war period, producing generations of minefields for phalerists.

    Hello Gilbert and Ed,

    Thanks for your reply!

This is the info I was looking for...

For how long this maker actually made imperial awards??

In fact the order I found the maker mark is a very beautiful version of the "Imperial Order of Our Lady of the Conception of Vila Vicosa", but as i learned here on the forum, this award is a house order of the royal house of Portugal. The current head of the house, HRH Dom Duarte, Duque de Bragan?a still awards this order.

Maybe Rothe still producing this awards

The Rothe firm went out of business permanently about two or three years ago. The "family" who were still active in the business (two sisters) sold off -all- of their inventory and closed the doors. I've heard that sale also included everything else owned by the firm....tools, dies, materials, etc. Perhaps the biggest loss to the phaleristic community is the records (production runs, correspondance with various states over orders, etc) that folks like Meester Reekee would kill for.... No one seems to know if records from the Imperial era were around when the firm went under, or what happened to them.
