Great detailed portraits! Notice the "strings" above his medal bar for wearing the Austrian and Bulgarian awards on thier trifolds.

He must have had spare Austrian and Bulgarian awards to ONLY wear when he was with his allies:

Those loops are to hold up this sort of trifold ribbon. Maybe the medal bar was the type with spring clips so the decorations could be removed from the medal bar.
