leigh kitchen Posted November 30, 2007 Posted November 30, 2007 (edited) About 2000 British volunteers fought in the Spanish Civil War, formimng the British Battalion of the 15th International Brigade. Many joined the conflict to fight what they saw as a larger threat, the spread of fascism across europe, - Hitlers rise in Germany, the activities of Moseleys Blackshirts in Londons East End, Francos rise in Spain, against lack of intervention by western european democracies.During the conflict the British Battalion suffered about 500 fatalities & 1200 seriously wounded.I came across this leaflet some years ago, It's undated but refers to 432 deaths & 793 seriously wounded having returned home, so was perhaps printed in the late 1930's while the conflict was still in progress.
