    A Bavarian Nobleman's Ribbon/Band Pattern Sword 1885

    Recommended Posts

Presented to Joseph von Allweyer-- Rick will be back with the research!!!!

A number of noblemen have left off their "vons." From these names, all were members of Bavarian Infantry Regiment 2 "Kronprinz" stationed in Munich and raised in 1682.

    and the point:

There is some slight possibility that the "Ribbon" or "Band" pattern blade on this weapon was forged in Bavaria, but it is unlikely. Ribbon Damscus blades were the specialty oi Max Dinger of Solingen. He worked during this period and lived in until 1910. Damascus blades would be ordered from Solingen and delivered finished to sword shops and retailers who took orders, or perhaps hilted the blades.

The retailer in this case was Johann Strollberger of Munich.

ENGRAVED ?Munich August 1885? ?Andlb?ss, Bauer, Braunm?ller, Friederich, Kufner, Roder, Spreti, Stefenelli, Vanderome, Welzl, Zwehl to our dear Allweyer?

Joseph von Allweyer: born Hof 8 October 1848, alive early 1914. No WW1 service listed in the Honor Rank List.

Wilhelm Andlb?ss: born Augsburg 22 June 1857, alive early 1914. Major aD 14.07.02, holding Bavarian Military Merit Order-Knight 2nd, 1905 Luitpold Jubilee Medal, Bavarian XXIV Years Service Cross, and Austro-Hungarian Franz Joseph Order-Knight. 1908 address: K?nigstra?e 45, M?nchen. No WW1 service listed in the Honor Rank List.

Bauer cannot be narrowed down without information closer to 1885 than my 1903. Major aD Julius, b. 1848? Major aD Heinrich, b. 1842? Oberlt dL II aD Ludwig, b. 1861?

Ludwig Braunm?ller: born M?nchen 24 January 1860, alive early 1914. Major aD 28.10.04, holding Bavarian Military Merit Order-Knight 1st, 1905 Luitpold Jubilee Medal, and Bavarian XXIV Years Service Cross. 1908 address: Daiserstra?e 3, M?nchen. No WW1 service listed in the Honor Rank List.

Friederich: I cannot tell if he was the Inf Leib Rgt Oberstleutnant, Eduard, listed in the 1908 German Orders Almanac who died later that year (not in the 190 Bavarian Military Handbook) OR char. Major aD (24.10.01) Bernhard, holder of the 1905 Luitpold Jubilee Medal and Bavarian XXIV Years Service Cross who was alive early in 1914 but has no Honor Rank List service shown for WW1.

Maximilian Kufner: born Burghausen 3 July 1856, alive early 1914. Char. Major aD 15.10.02, holding 1905 Luitpold Jubilee Medal, Bavarian XXIV Years Service Cross, Prussian Red Eagle Order 4, and Baden Z?hringen Lion Order-Knight 2nd with Oakleaves. In 1908 he was listed as ?Major, retired and prison inspector? (Gef?ngnis Inspektor) in Ensisheim. No WW1 service listed in the Honor Rank List.

Ernst Roder: born Augsburg 28 August 1859, alive in 1926.Major zur Disposition 04.08.03, remaining in that rank in 1914. Held Bavarian Military Merit Order 4 with Crown, 1905 Luitpold Jubilee Medal, and Bavarian XXIV Years Service Cross. Reactivated for WW1 as Oberstleutnant zD, last serving as commander of Bavarian Ersatz Regiment 4. Re-retired as Oberst aD.

Graf von Spreti: there were several possible. Bernhard, b. 1849? Franz? Or ??

Stefenelli von Prenterhof und Hohenmaur: would appear to have been Ludwig, Hauptmann dL I (LWB M?nchen) 03.10.03, promoted to Major dL 29.10.13. Held Bavarian Order of St. Michael 3, 1905 Luitpold Jubilee medal, and Bavarian XX Years Reserve-Landwehr Cross. Nothing else known.

Konrad/Conrad Vanderome: born Wertingen 8 March 1860, alive early 1914. Char. Oberstleutnant aD 28.10.05, holding Bavarian Military Merit Order 4, 1905 Luitpold Jubilee Medal, and Prussian Crown Order 4. 1908 address: R?merstra?e 13, M?nchen. No Honor Rank List service shown for WW1.

Max Welzl: retired as charakterisiert Hauptmann aD 01.05.1892, alive 1926. Held only the 1905 Luitpold Jubilee medal. Recalled for WW1 as Hauptmann aD on staff of Landwehrbezirk Deggendorf, RE-retiring as Captain again! His Honor Rank List entry shows his last pre-WW1 unit as KB Inf Rgt 2, from which it seems likely that all these officers were serving in that regiment in 1885.

von Zwehl: could be either Alexander b. 1853 who was Oberstleutnant zD 03.12.1900 and a Court official, or Theodor (14.06.1849-17.10.1915) who died on active duty as General der Infanterie zD and Governor of Warsaw Military Zone, or Theobald?Premierlieutenant aD 07.05.1889. Need data closer to 1885 than my 1903.

Note the casual use of shortened names and dropped aristocratic prefixes typical of ?laid back? Bavaria!
