    Hi Everyone!

    I have an India General Service Medal with "NORTH WEST FRONTIER 1930 - 31" clasp named to: "7798 SEP. SURJAN SINGH. 1-11 SIKH R."

    I was wondering if someone could tell me what the abbreviations, etc., meant in the naming of the medal?

    Thanks again!! :D

    Sep. = Sepoy = Private.

    7798 = his regimental number

    SEP. = Sepoy (same as private in Indian infantry)

    SURJAN SINGH. = his name (a Sikh)

    1-11 SIKH R. = 1st Battalion (King George's Own) (Ferozepore Sikhs), 11th Sikh Regiment (until 1922 the 14th King George's Own Ferozepore Sikhs)

    Any other questions?

    I might add that, as the regiment remained in India in 1947, there is some chance that, within a couple of years, it may become possible to get more information on Surjan Singh, if (as hoped) records are transferred from the regiment to the Centre for Armed Forces Historical Research.

    The CWGC records (far from complete) do not show him as a KIA in WWII. The battalion served in India and Burma.
