Guest Rick Research Posted December 16, 2008 Posted December 16, 2008 I've always thought this anonymous snapshot sums up every social and political and military aspect of 1914:barefoot urban working class children gaze in awe as a godlike reserve officer, resplendent in his part-time martial finery and "fully loaded" for Modern War (as 1870 Redux) is enthusiastically bade farewell and Home By Christmas by nattily attired members of the middle class.Class, popular enthusiasm and delusions about the coming war... a society to be swept away by the unsuspected grim reality to come...This one photo has "everything."
