JanZizka Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Hello, I'm rather new here as I was directed here from the Gunboards forum. A friend of mine from work who knows I collect militaria and firearms wanted me to do a little research on some medals and other items that her father had. As German militaria isn't really my area of interest any help would be greatly appreciated. Mostly she wants to get an idea what the value would be but would also like some help as far as what exactly the items are. All of them look original from my limited knowledge, considering her father was a WW2 vet and accumulated these during his service as well as from friends and acquaintances I've no reason to doubt them. Anyways, I've got some pictures below of some of the items in question and will be posting others in more appropriate forums here. She has two of what appears to be Iron Crosses, am guessing they are WW1 vintage by the '1914' and 'W' with crown marking on one side. Though its not too obvious in the pics, the crowns are slightly different. The one that is more worn has a crown that is more squarish shaped and slightly different than the other. At first I thought nothing of it but the crown looks like it is definitely a different type than the first. Also had a ring that looks like an Iron Cross medal. It is very small sized, barely fits on my pinky. Unsure if this is First or Second World War vintage.Any help on exactly what I have here as well as values would be greatly appreciated.
Richarddwh Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 It is difficult to ascertain from the image the condition of the reverse of the second Iron Cross you display. In my opinion the first would be around $20 and the second if in good condition ( the obverse looks good ) would be around $50-60. The value can differ depending on the maker, check for marks on the suspension ring. Millions were produced by a host of manufacturers and so you to do tend to get variations in crown size etcThe boxed ring I am not so sure on, if it's the original box than it is a bonus as is if it made from precious metal. Otherwise around $40-50 just my guess. It appears to relate to the First World War according the black and white ribbon. the These just my approximations, the kind of prices I would expect to pay for them, ultimately and perhaps unhelpfully value is as much or as little as one is prepared to pay. Other opinions may provide a better spread of valuations.
Christian J Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 Is the case just an ordinary? Anything on the lid?I've seen the most elaborate cases for patriotic jewellery from that time (I would say 10-20ties) and these are quite sought after.
JanZizka Posted January 13, 2009 Author Posted January 13, 2009 My apologies for not responding in a timelier fashion, I have been away quite a bit due to work lately. The case for the ring is definitely NOT original, its just a case that she had available to keep it in to keep it from getting battered around. Tom63: I think that is some kind of maker's mark on the ring on the iron cross. On closer inspection there is something present on both of them, on the one it appears to me 'MFH' (possibly U or V instead of 'M', lettering is so tiny it is difficult to make out), on the other appears to be 'DOR' (again, possibly 'O' instead of 'D', lettering here is even tinier than the other one).Thank you-Jan
