The Fechterabzeichen was instituted in Prussia in 1889 (Bavaria 1890). The award was bestowed by the commander of a cavalry regiment for proficiency in fighting with a lance from horseback. A maximum of twelve per Squadron could be given out in a year. The award had several classes. The Fechterabzeichen was worn on the right sleeve in form of one or more chevrons.

In 1916 Wachtmeister Koslowski served at the Etappen-Pferdedepot 8 in Russisch-Krottingen (Lithuania)

Here is one of the remounts of EPD 8, ridden by Wachtmeister Bornherz from K?nigsberg

Here's an example (4.Stufe) of the first degree of the higher classes of Fechterabzeichen. The first three classes were formed from linen braid (Borte) with the state indicated by a colored stripe running down the middle. The fourth class was a single metalic lace (Tresse) chevron, also with a single line of color running down the middle. This example is Prussian (black stripe). The classes 5-12 were indicated by combinations of Tresse and Borte. Kloslowski wears an example of the 1.Stufe, the wider linen single chevron.

I wish I had a few more! They don't turn up on the loose very often. I found this one at the Stuttgart show back in 1982. ($2.00).

Sorry to revive such a dead thread, but I am building an Uhlan senior NCO kit and was wondering if anyone could advise on a question or two regarding the chevrons.

    1) Was the wear of the chevrons still authorised into WW1? If so, did they JUST remain authorised for wear or did they continue to be awarded during the conflict as well?

    2) What were the requirements to earn the decoration? (Assuming the criteria was standardised) Or was it left up to the Commanders to simply award as they saw fit?

    3) I’ve heard discussions regarding the awarding of similar chevrons for sword proficiency amongst other (non-lancer) units. Can anyone advise if this was the case or not?

Many thanks to any and all responders.

    Cheers!
