Beau Newman Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 I picked up this Knight 1st Class of the Zahringen Lion several years ago. It has a French style rosette on the ribbon. Both the ribbon and rosette are nicely aged and appear to be period. I haven't been able to find anything in the references on this type of ribbon device for the Zahringen. Perhaps a foreign recipient?
saschaw Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 (edited) Aha, you got that one. I remember when it was offered, some years ago... There never was such a rosette for the Z?hringer Lion order, so I assume it was a foreign recipient. Actually, it is not even a proper Z?hringer ribbon. However, very nice and interresting one. Does the cross have any hallmarks? Edited February 25, 2009 by saschaw
Beau Newman Posted February 26, 2009 Author Posted February 26, 2009 No marks that I can find. It does test as gold and appears to be typical of ca. 1890 - 1910 German manufacture. Only the ribbon makes it unusual.
