It was a secret project to bottle miniaturized commandos and allow them to be "decanted" (the Soviet "Desantnik" was the same project in parallel) unsuspected behind enemy lines. That part was cut out of "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

Sometimes I just check to see if anyone is paying attention.
