The Monkey God Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 (edited) Hi Guys,Can anyone tell me whether you`d get the war on Terror medal(s) & the Iraq medal for the same tour? Edited June 24, 2009 by The Monkey God
Doc Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 I don't have time to look up the regulations right now, but to steal from Wikipedia (yeah, I know).....This decoration (Iraq Campaign Medal) replaces the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal for service in Iraq and personnel who previously received the GWOTEM for Iraq service may elect to exchange the medal for the new Iraq Campaign Medal. Both medals may not be received for the same period of service in Iraq and any current Iraq service will be recognized only with the Iraq Campaign Medal. Doc
Paul R Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 I received the GWOTE for my time over there. One gets to pick one or the other, for each deployment. Most that have been there twice have both. The GWOTSM is not awarded for deploying OCONUS.
TS Allen Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 The GWOTSM is the more commonly awarded of the two, it appears, because its been around for longer and also because, compared to the Iraq War Medal, it's awarded for service in a much wider area.I was talking to a Naval Academy midshipman, and he says its not uncommon for mids to have the GWOTSM! Not the prior-enlisted types either, they can earn one on a thirty-day summer cruise in the Persian Gulf! ~TS
