Chris Boonzaier Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 This is a rare one,A smoke grenade that was at the same time poisonous. I did not know they existed....
Thomas W Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 That's also the incendiary grenade, called variously the Brandgranate, Brandhandgranate, or Flammenkugel. This flamethrower shock troop from early 1916 has a couple bags of them.

Any idea if it is the same grenade as the one I have pictured? I am still not sure of how mine fits into the picture...
Chris Liontas Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Did they actually put gas in them?? I didnt know they would have a gas grenade. What would they use? Chlorine or phosgene?

Actually, they used tear gas. The Russians had a toxic gas grenade, but it wasn't effective because grenade heads couldn't hold enough of the agent. A small amount of tear gas can effect a trench full of soldiers without gas masks, but a small amount of poisonous gas will dissipate quickly.
