The first award is actually the second class (silver) of the Medal for Service to Socialist Country. Greg Collins
Hey Kevin, Again, great bars (a couple of the final image bars seem to be a little on the "rode hard and put up wet" side of things)! The weird thing is you seem to have gotten only one military bar (the first is either Security Troops or Militia) and the rest seem to be civilian (Party members). I have seen duplicate ribbons as well- commemoratives at that- on the same bar and always thought that was peculiar. I guess that's part of the joy of collecting Romania. The first time I ran across a ribbon bar without military awards I thought it fake until I found a site for an organization investigating crimes under the Communist regime. They have a great collection of photos and, sure enough, found Party members at anniversaries wearing ribbon bars on their suits- most too young to be veterans. May have also happened in the DDR. Kev in Deva
Just to bump up this thread, I picked up to more Romanian Communist Bars yesterday at the local Hobby Club. Medal for Service to Socialist Homeland - Gold - First Class. IN SERVICIUL PATRIEI SOCALISTE. 4. The Twentieth Anniversary Medal of the Armed Forces Day 25 October 1944 -1964. AND a 3 place Civil one:- 1. Order of Labour, III Class. 2. 50th Anniversary of the Romanian Communist Pary" Medal. 3. 25th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Country Medal. Opps!!! time for dinner will complete the list later. Kevin in Deva. Edited December 12, 2009 by Kev in Deva
Greg Collins
Kevin, While you're dining, and I hope you don't mind my "horning in", I thought I'd complete the list for the first bar... the first ribbon is actually a 2nd Class Order of Military Merit; in second position is the Order for Service to Socialist Country, 3rd Class (Bronze), and in the last position, the medal for the 20th Anniversary of the Romanian Armed Forces. A beautiful RPR Securitate/Militia bar! While I have the awards themselves, I haven't, to date, been able to track down the ribbons. Great find! Ulsterman
Very cool Kev!! Do you ever see any photos of these being worn? If you ever have a few extra you want to unload, let me know! Really interesting and great bars!
Guest Rick Research
Missed quite a few of these earlier. I always assumed ribbon bars like these were worn on uniforms, so being worn on civilian clothes is noteworthy. Old Soviet veterans did, but I've never seen anyone else wearing ribbon bars on civilian clothes in the old Warsaw Pact countries.
Greg Collins
Managed to find a couple of images that show ribbon bars being worn on uniforms and civilian clothing. These are from the Online Communism Photo Collection (Romania). First, a 1978 image of Ceausescu and Military Staff:
Greg Collins
Next, and from the same source, a group photo of a 1 May crowd in 1965 (Bucharest). Ceausescu is in the very center of the crowd. A smattering of ribbon bars and medals can be seen.
Kev in Deva
Hi Greg, great pictures, thanks for posting:jumping: If anything the pictures I have seen in newspapers tend to show even high-ranking Romanian officers wearing a modest amount of "Bling". Greg Collins
Thanks, Kevin. The Online Communism Photo Collection is pretty interesting and bears a look. A lot of images and, while some are relatively boring- Ceausescu meeting with other countries' leaders in the same old room- there's some pretty good stuff there.
