    Hey Kevin,

Again, great bars (a couple of the final image bars seem to be a little on the "rode hard and put up wet" side of things)! The weird thing is you seem to have gotten only one military bar (the first is either Security Troops or Militia) and the rest seem to be civilian (Party members). I have seen duplicate ribbons as well- commemoratives at that- on the same bar and always thought that was peculiar. I guess that's part of the joy of collecting Romania.

The first time I ran across a ribbon bar without military awards I thought it fake until I found a site for an organization investigating crimes under the Communist regime. They have a great collection of photos and, sure enough, found Party members at anniversaries wearing ribbon bars on their suits- most too young to be veterans. May have also happened in the DDR.

    Kevin,

While you're dining, and I hope you don't mind my "horning in", I thought I'd complete the list for the first bar... the first ribbon is actually a 2nd Class Order of Military Merit; in second position is the Order for Service to Socialist Country, 3rd Class (Bronze), and in the last position, the medal for the 20th Anniversary of the Romanian Armed Forces. A beautiful RPR Securitate/Militia bar! While I have the awards themselves, I haven't, to date, been able to track down the ribbons. Great find!

    Guest Rick Research

Missed quite a few of these earlier.

I always assumed ribbon bars like these were worn on uniforms, so being worn on civilian clothes is noteworthy. Old Soviet veterans did, but I've never seen anyone else wearing ribbon bars on civilian clothes in the old Warsaw Pact countries.

Thanks, Kevin. The Online Communism Photo Collection is pretty interesting and bears a look. A lot of images and, while some are relatively boring- Ceausescu meeting with other countries' leaders in the same old room- there's some pretty good stuff there. The link is:

    Enjoy!
