Italy - an Al Valore Militare for Novara 1849

    Recommended Posts

This is a very early Al Valore Militare medal with the "F.G" hallmark. It is fitted with a ball & ring suspension instead of the more familiar staffa used on later AVM medals. It is beautifully engraved around the rim "GUERRA DELL'INDIPENDENZA ITALIANA - SFORZESCA E NOVARA - 21 E 23 MARZO 1849" Its center is engraved to "DULFUS / Bne. BOLESLAS / SOTTOTENENTE / NELL 1o REGGo / DI FANTa". I apologize for my scans being affected by the light reflection off the medal surfaces.

Novara was one of the first battles fought by the Sardinians against Austria in the Risorgimento (emergence) of the Italian nation. It was a defeat which forced the abdication of King Charles Albert in favor of his son Victor Emmanuel II. But the Savoy dynasty earned the moral victory, and a reputation which made it the leader of Italy's national hopes.

I believe "Bne." is a title of nobility, meaning "Baron" Dulfus. That surname (cognomen) sounds more Hungarian rather than Sardinian or Italian. Perhaps Dulfus was a refugee from Austria-Hungary who had no love for the Hapsburgs.

Would any GMIC member have additional information about this junior officer??
