JBFloyd Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 (edited) Can anyone offer insight about this medal. It seems like a step up from the usual "For he's a jolly good fellow" commemorative. It's marked "Silver" on the edge and "Spink & Son" below Roberts' right shoulder. The reverse has "1900" at the top and "Bloemfontein/Pretoria" in the exergue. It has a 45mm diameter (4mm thick). paul wood Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 The reverse. Jeff, It is as you say by Spink and Son and desiogned by Frank Bowcher it is the companion piece to the Baden Powell Mafeking, Laurence Brown in British Historical Medals (no. 36780 only records it in bronze and lists at as relatively common but I would imagine in silver it must be quite rare. All the best, Paul
Brett Hendey Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 A medallion such as the one shown was recently sold by City Coins, Cape Town (Sale 59, Lot 311), for SA Rand600, which is about US$80. Brett
JBFloyd Posted January 30, 2010 Author Posted January 30, 2010 Brett, Thanks. That helps place it in context.
