Mboxer Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 Hi everyone and thanks for the help with the last badge. I want your opinion on this one also: And later this evening I'll add more photos of more badges since you have me worried about them all now..
Mboxer Posted December 23, 2005 Author Posted December 23, 2005 How about this one? We'll call it badge #2
Mboxer Posted December 23, 2005 Author Posted December 23, 2005 here is number 4. I put it on a dark background and didn't use a flash. It has a white-ish frosted finish that washes out pretty bad with flash.
Mboxer Posted December 23, 2005 Author Posted December 23, 2005 (edited) also #4 Edited December 23, 2005 by Mboxer
Bob Hunter Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 I agree with Don. #1 is a nice example of a legitimate flat back PAB. The rest, #2, #3, and #4 all have the telltale flatback which sets off alarm bells and whistles. All of those badges should have a slightly dished back. Check out Stogieman's Hermann Aurich PAB in the Sale Room and note the shape of the back compared to your example. Also check out that thread I referred you to in your earlier post. The guys have some great examples of various makers badges ranging from common to exceedingly rare.
Mboxer Posted December 23, 2005 Author Posted December 23, 2005 Darrell (or anyone), On the #4 is that maker in a flatback always a fake?
Bob Hunter Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 I won't say never and I won't say always but I will say I have yet to see a flat back Hermann Aurich that the PAB collecting community accepted as real.Another great PAB site to check out is Mike Pinkus' effort at: http://tankbadges.homestead.com/
Mboxer Posted December 23, 2005 Author Posted December 23, 2005 I'm trying to learn some good rules of thumb so I don't have to keep asking.. So what makes #1 a good flatback?this one is a bit concave.. is it OK?
Bob Hunter Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 (edited) When you read over what Mike Pinkus has written on his site you will have some pretty good thumb rules for each of the known makers. This is a picture of the front of an authentic Frank & Reif badge. Edited December 23, 2005 by Bob Hunter
Bob Hunter Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 and this is the reverse of an authentic Frank & Reif badge.
Bob Hunter Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 Now let me see if I can find a Hermann Aurich example...
Bob Hunter Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 (edited) ...and another from the same maker. Note the distictive hinge setup on the badge. Edited December 23, 2005 by Bob Hunter
Guest Darrell Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 (edited) Mboxer ... the last two that Bob has posted are the only accepted original type HA Tank Badges ....Bob ... damn that last one is minty !!! Edited December 23, 2005 by Darrell
dond Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 #2,3,&4 are fakes. The last one posted I'm not sure about. Can we please see the front.Bob, you've been holding out. I have a place in the motorpool for that last badge you posted. Don
Bob Hunter Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 (edited) That tank is in depot maintenance for turret and fire control upgrades. Don, you will be amused to know that a couple of our learned colleagues (and yes, I use the term with great derision) like to dipute the HS's authenticity simply because they have never seen one with that finish.
