Jeff K Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 Greetings gentlemen, I've developed an interest in collecting medals from the Spanish American War, inlcuding those from the veterans organizations. However, I know next to nothing about them. I recently purchased an enlisted man's veteran medal but hesitate to go further without knowing what I'm looking at. Can anyone recommend reference materials or web sites? Many Thanks, --jeff
army historian Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 (edited) The Spanish American War period, can be expensive or cheap. Most Veterans society medals go for about US $50 to $100., with $100. being the highest, I would pay for a common medal. The US Campaign medals range in price $10.00 (Current restrike) to a lot on money for ID'ed numbered medals or groups. The numbered medals are not all traceable. You would need to get information from a US collector. Here is a website to start: http://www.spanamwar.com/medals.htm Also use the internet. Ulsterman Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 There were a number of state and local medals issued for the Span-Am. war as well as encampment badges/medals. OMSA has had a few monographs published on the subject. I believe Jeff Floyd, who is a treasure trove on US medals, may be able to point you to general references. There was also a CUBAN issued Span-Am. campaign medal, which only a relative few US vets purchased/ had awarded.
