Unfortunately no indication of when it was... I think the G88 is from the photo studio... note how the bayonet is not properly on it....

Hi Chris,

Great photo! Thanks for sharing it. I've seen photos of the Schutztruppe around this period (probably 1904-05) before showing bayonets that shouldn't be fitted to the rifles they had. But never seen one where it's not actually fixed on. Interestingly I've only seen photos of the G88 used by the Schutztruppe in these German photo studios, never seen one in Africa.... I'm sure they had the G88 out there, just never seen it done.

There were certainly GEW88 out there in DSWA .Saw one awhile ago that came back as WW1 souvenier from DSWA .Actually a Karbiner 88 (later version for S catridge) See image. Interesting bayonet your guy is wearing on belt.

Indeed... but I have just noticed... he still has his regular one in the sheath... and it is the same one as the two guys below him! Wonder why he did not put it on?
