I am not much of a uboat badge guy. I have an early Schott to lay with my daggers. I found this one for cheap, thinking it was from the 30's. Any help is always appreciated.

obv---Hard to photo for me as it has a lot of gilt remaining, so the light dances around

Those little dimples along the lower left reverse seem to be from the gilding process when viewed under my stereoscope.

Badge is definitely die stamped as it has the die release marks all around the edge.

Hi Vic,

Sorry, but for me this is a cast repro (as evidenced by the pock-marking, strange raised lumps on the lower reverse and weak maker mark) with incorrect hardware. Imo more likely 1980s.

Or could be used by re-enactors, or as an example in a museum display, or as an inexpensive collecting alternative. If you do keep it, or pass it on, I would suggest irreversibly marking the piece so that it can never be interpreted as a period badge. "counterfeit" carved into the reverse comes to mind. Just a thought.

(This issue is near the surface to me because soon I will be interested in buying a recognized fake award as a place holder. But that's going to be a different thread altogether)
