How about this for a epitaph...

    Heir ruht in Gott

    Mein lieber Gaffe,

    Unser gutter Vater

    Bruder und Schwager

    Der Fürstl. Reussische Stallmeister

    Gustav Würzburg

    Here rests in God

    My dear husband,

    Our good father

    Brother and brother-in-law

    The Reuss Prince's Stablemaster

    Gustav Würzburg

    born Nov 17, 1860 - died April 24, 1909: age 48 :speechless1: Did he get thrown off a horse?

Does anyone find in him in any (peacetime) award lists? Likely from Reuss.

    Here is his tombstone...

I can't read the bottom part that is partially obscured by foliage.

It looks like it says "Ruht Sanft," which would translate to "Gentle Rest." Which would be quite appropriate on a tombstone, IMHO.

Hi,"Ruhe sanft" or "Ruhe in Frieden" is typical!

    Best regards,

    Jens

Thank you Harvey and KIR. Yes, that would be very appropriate on the tomb stone.

I still can't get over how young he was when he died (48 1/2 years). I suppose a traumatic illness is as likely as an equine accident.

Life expectancy for his birth year was only 50-60 years. So, a couple years early, but not so "young". Probably an accident or sudden illness.
