Bill Garvy Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 I thought I would post what I construe as an unusual "800" marked Iron Cross in 1st Class. It is very light with delicate features. The core appears to be copper coated, at first I thought brass, and it is magnetic. Comments welcome. . .obverse:reverse:
Bill Garvy Posted January 9, 2006 Author Posted January 9, 2006 Note the location of the "800" mark by the hinge, and the view of the clasp reveals its gentle vaulting. . ."800" mark by the hinge:clasp:
gregM Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Hi Bill,That is an unusual cross. I like it. I have seen that style of pin before on a iron corecross. I looked through my files thinking I had saved a picture of it but sadly I did not.
Daniel Murphy Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Bill, Perhaps this was something that was offered as an option by a few makers. Persons who served in areas where the rust resistance was needed, Naval or Infantry troops( fighting in the mud etc.) may have purchased them. I have one by another maker that has what appears to be a copper core but is magnetic. They are no doubt real but scarce.Dan Murphy
Bill Garvy Posted January 10, 2006 Author Posted January 10, 2006 Thank you, gentlmen, for your responses. Interestingly, I was told the original owner was a Navy man. . .
