Spasm Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 The matchstick man painter Lowry turned down 5 over the years. He said it was because he didn't want anything "latched" on to him.
Mervyn Mitton Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 Mike - makes very interesting reading. I recognise many left wingers in the list - they should not have been offered them in the first place. The Military refusals seem strange until you look at the level of the Award - a Brigadier must feel slighted to be given an MBE or, OBE. Also, several titled people turned down the CBE's. I also saw that several turned down Knighthoods - possibly not wanted in their line of work. Only one Baronetcy refused - this is the lowest hereditary honour and gives the title 'Sir'.
Bison Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Food for thought: "C'est très bien de l'avoir refusée ; mais encore faudrait-il ne pas l'avoir méritée", Jacques Prévert said about the refusal of Louis Aragon for the Légion d'honneur... "That's great to have refused it, but only if he would not have deserved it"
Megan Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I fail to see why the services rendered by a person of 'left-wing' views are any less worthy of recognition... or is it that you suspect that they'd be predisposed to say "No, thank you," hence not much point in offering an honour to them?
Mervyn Mitton Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 Exactly that, Megan. Everyone has the right to their own views - although we have the right not to agree with them. However, by making the offer, the Government makes itself look silly when they refuse. This is why they have an Honours Committee in the first place. Mervyn
