My first thought was that these insignia, similar to the insignia on the period Scheinwerfer sleeve patch, were taken from what the Austrians called the "Konventionelle Zeichen", that is, the conventional unit map symbols. These were the small shorthand version of indicating a unit on a map or on a unit order of battle or strength chart. I looked through eleven pages of the Austrian symbols and could not come up with it, but a similar German chart may include this.

This a good thread to resurrect.

A picture with "X" abzeichen denotes Befehlsstelle, or Command Post in English?

Or it could be a Roman numeral "X". The serifs tend to make me think that is what it is.

Hi Chip, I believe you are right.

The epaulet device on the man sitting down appear to be a winged propeller?

    Hello!

I don´t think, it´s "Befehlsstelle". To me it´s a roman numeral too. Probably a Luftwaffen unit of the X.Army corps or these guys served with the staff of Gruppenführer der Flieger Nr. 10 (set-up 1917) or Gruppenführer der Jagdstaffel 10 (set-up 1918)

These both are amazing photos! Congratulations to the find!!!!!

The Probe piece in the Bavarian Army Museum indicates that Flieger sleeve patches with Roman numerals only are to be worn by officers and enlisted men of Kampfgeschwader.
