MLW Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Hello! I recent found and scanned the English and German versions of a document I found inthe US National Archvies titled German Testimony Regarding Sgt York's Exploits. It is quite an interesting read. Here are the links to the documents: http://downloads.sturmpanzer.net/MLW/German_Testimony_Regarding_Sgt_York's_Exploits_(English).pdf http://downloads.sturmpanzer.net/MLW/German_Testimony_Regarding_Sgt_York's_Exploits_(German).pdf
MLW Posted February 17, 2012 Author Posted February 17, 2012 I apologize for that. Here are the links again, but without using the "insert link" function of this forum. You should be able to cut and paste the links into your browser and get the download. http://downloads.sturmpanzer.net/MLW/German_Testimony_Regarding_Sgt_York's_Exploits_(English).pdf http://downloads.sturmpanzer.net/MLW/German_Testimony_Regarding_Sgt_York's_Exploits_(German).pdf
Lee Enfield Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 The link does not work however given that in most cases that history is written usually from the victors agenda that the Sgtyork story , while no doubt a heroic act in a war of heroes, also has a perspective that is not as romantisised as the Gary Cooper film version would have us believe. By the time Sgt Yorks action took place the war had almsot come to a close, the germans he captured were mostly youths , in many cases under 16 years old. They were low on supplies and ammunition and no doubt war weary and homesick. To capture an entire trench single handedly and then take so many prisoners across no mans land back to your own lines is an exceptional act however the element of time and logistics also played a major part in his success.
MLW Posted April 28, 2012 Author Posted April 28, 2012 (edited) Sorry about the broken links - but I can't seem to post complete links in this forum. Very disappointing. Edited April 28, 2012 by MLW
