SteveL Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 (edited) Gents...my latest purchase, it has taken me two years to find one ! a Model 1956 Bundeswehr steel helmet and liner, U.S. M1 style....marked on inside of shell "F.W.Q. 56 34" which I believe is for the maker " F.W.Quist " made in 1956, lot number 34. The shell is in great shape with no damage or dings, as is often the case with these helmets as they were manufactured from low grade steel and were easily dented ! the liner is virtually the same as a U.S. M1 except the nape strape is not removable...it to is maker marked " HRS-Gr Umst. 56", I think this for the company of Hans Romer, if anyone can shed light on this marking, please tell...the liner was also made in 1956. All in all I am very pleased with it, it has filled a gap in my collection....now to find an Affenjacke ! Prost ! Gordon Craig Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 Steve, I have never seen a marking like this on BW helmets so I have asked some helmet collector friends for their help. So far this remains an unknown mark. It is not one normally associated with a Romer liner. One recent question was "does the liner have a vent on the left side like the one in this picture". So I am passing the question on to you. Regards, Gordon
SteveL Posted July 20, 2012 Author Posted July 20, 2012 (edited) Gordon, no vent hole on the left side...my other liner is marked, but sadly unreadable, this too has no vent... as far as I am aware they (M56) do not have a vent hole as you show in your photograph.....see attached photographs of my two liners, left...one with shell...right.....liner with out shell. Prost ! Gordon Craig Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 Steve, Thanks for the pictures. I'll contiue to persue these markings with my friends. Regards, Gordon
Gordon Craig Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Steve, The answer to the markings on your liner. It is from a helmet collector in Austria that I know. Regards, Gordon The maker of the Bundeswehr liner “HRS-Gr.Umst.” is the Firm of Hermann Römmler Spremberg –Groß Umstadt. This firm was quite famous for inventing a way to produce “artificial” wood panels for making furniture in the Thierties. The stuff they made and still made is known as “Resopal”. A not so often seen maker. I only have one of this maker.
SteveL Posted July 25, 2012 Author Posted July 25, 2012 Gordon, thanks for your reply, and for making enquiries with regards to this marking...... a great piece of information, I have never heard of this firm, and had, quite wrongly, assumed it was another location of the Hans Romer firm ! Thanks again..Prost ! Steve.
Gordon Craig Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Steve, You are welcome. I had never heard of this firm before either so this news is welcome to me as well. Nice to see that for your first BW helmet of this type you got a rare liner maker. Regards, Gordon
