ozomahtli
My grandfather was awarded the Order of Yugoslavia Flag by Tito in 1963, unfortunately the award was lost in a home robbery. So I am reconstructing his award. I have so far managed to purchase the box, the star and the badge. But I would like to know what else came in the box as I see it has several slots. Cheers. paja
Greetings, As I am the first one to answer your question let me just first welcome you to GMIC. Sorry to hear about the robbery. The order itself is rare, according to some sources just somewhere around 1500 were awarded, mainly to diplomats. How many slots are there in the box? I have only seen boxes with 3 slots so far. I also have the 2nd class (only breast star unfortunately) and I have posted pictures of mine somewhere on this forum. It would be great if you could post some pictures of your decoration and the box here. Now to answer your question, this is what came in the box. paja
Mine came originally with the order, but there where lot of boards with ribbons like this for all of Yugoslavian decorations. So sellers started dividing those complete sets and selling every piece individually. I've seen them being sold for not more than 10 dollars in Serbia. I also guess that you could buy them at those special shops for men in the service only. There are also lot of them without that metal application in the front. Good side of this is that they are not so hard to find and that they are not so expensive. But my opinion is that the ones that originally came with the order are more valuable even though they might look exactly the same. ozomahtli
Thanks for your response paja, the box has 3 slots, as you say, I will post pictures as soon as I can. So the three slots had 3 ribbons, no miniature medals? thanks for the welcoming, I am also digging out a photo Tito dedicated to my grandfather, will post it soon. cheers Oz
ozomahtli
The case actually has two straight slots, the third is a curved slot which I believe is to accommodate the top of the star's back.
paja
You are welcome Oz. As far as I know those slots are only for ribbons. Miniature medals were not issued with the award itself, I believe you had to order them from the special Chancellery for orders. By the way there were three types of miniatures, I have the third, last and the most common type. In case you are interested this is how it looks. paja
Your grandfather must have been on some higher position when he was awarded Yugoslav flag 2nd class. Please don't forget to post some pics of the box too. Can't wait to see them. I've just stumbled upon this on ebay, but my opinion is that the price is far too high. http://www.ebay.com/...=item2576a9762c Edited October 27, 2012 by paja
ozomahtli
Hi paja, Thanks for all the info, I saw the ribbon on ebay, it is quite expensive, I checked under finished items for OYF and saw one had sold for 15 or so dlrs. I guess its a matter of waiting to see other listed for a better price. My grandfather was a Mexican socialist, diplomat, politician and industrialist, who went to Europe to study the post WWII economic reconstruction of Eastern European States, he met and befriended Tito in 1945. Tito awarded him the Order in 1963 after he orchestrated some economic trade between Mexico and Yugoslavia. Here is the photo Tito dedicated to my grandfather. paja
You are most welcome Oz, I'm glad I was able to help you a little bit. Great story, sounds like your grandfather was a very interesting man, you must be proud of him. Nice photo of Marshal Tito, thank you for sharing it with us! ozomahtli
Indeed, he was a very interesting man, a humanist above all. He died without a ill-gotten treasure, proud and honest. A real example of what a statesman is. He also received the Legion D'Honneur Officer class from France's President Georges Pompidou in 1974. He is honored every year in the anniversary of his death by the ex-workers of the industries he managed. Thanks for the links and info.
ozomahtli
Paja, do you know how the badge and star were meant to be worn? I haven't found any reference to when or how these were meant to be worn.
paja
Too bad that there are not many people like him today. A man honored by his workers and employees, people under him, is a man who really earned his respect. The badge was meant to be worn around the neck and I think that the star was meant to be worn on the right side of the chest. I also think that the order was worn only on special, ceremonial occasions. Best regards, Radmilo
ozomahtli
The highest paid industrial workers in Mexico during the 50s and 60s were his workers, he often told me, the greatest asset any company has are its workers. He created scholarships to send people to study in France, USA & Canada, he gave no interest loans to his workers' families so they could start small businesses among any other ways he rewarded good, honest work. Ten men like him would make a real difference in any country. One is just a utopian visionaire. I wasn't quite sure what grade of the Legion D'Honneur he had received, so I sent a request for information to the French embassy in Mexico and they informed me he in fact received; the Grand Cross of the Legion D'Honneur in 1962 from Charles de Gaulle and the Grand Officer of the l'Ordre National du Merite in 1970 from Georges Pompidou. Official Mexico has yet to honor him with even a street name. I am going to make a display case for his medals (which I need to procure now —I just bought the OYF, but need to get the others), books he wrote and a newspaper he directed in 1939 opposing the fascists governments in Europe and emerging fascism in Mexico then. Thanks for all the great info. Best regards
paja
It's really sad that the burglars took your grandfather's orders. Maybe you should register on every forum like GMIC that you can find and post the list of orders that were stolen from you. Burglars will most likely try to sell them and if they are stupid enough to a commit a crime like that then they might stupid enough to try to sell them for example on ebay-like sites. It can't hurt to notify collecting community about this, maybe someone somewhere will stumble upon your grandfather's orders. paja
I forgot to mention in previous reply, there is a separate Lost & Stolen section here on GMIC. http://gmic.co.uk/in...lost-or-stolen/ But I think it would attract more attention if you make topics about the stolen orders in the sections for a specific country or region. ozomahtli
Thank you Radmilo for all your information and concern, the robbery happened sometime ago in Mexico City, I think at this point it would be fruitless to list them. I have just finished replacing all his medals, so I am awaiting their delivery. I will make a shadowbox to showcase them, I will post images on this and the France forum when I get them. I did make a mistake when I said he received the Grand Cross, he received the grade of Commandeur in the LOH. cheers, Oz Edited November 1, 2012 by ozomahtli
ozomahtli
I am now working on this display of my grandfather's orders: The Legion d'honneur, commandeur grade; the Ordre du Mérite, Grand Officier grade; and the Order of Yugoslavian Flag with Gold Wreath (Grand Officer grade).
