trev from new zealan Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Third time lucky getting this on. Hoping someone can suggest which naval uniform this is. Taken about 1946 presumably at the home of the chap in Invercargill New Zealand. Someone has suggested it is British rather than New Zealand. Family just don't know although have vague recollections of their much older brother being in a uniform. Suggestions welcomed Thanks Trev
Odulf Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Hi Trev, To my opinion, this is a square rig of a Commonwealth Navy lower rating. Interesting are the extremely long tapes hanging out of the jumper (non regulation) which were intended to keep the silk in place. Thus, all Commonwealth Navies basicly wore the same uniform, differences can be found in the prefix on the tally (HMS, HMCS, etc.), and the use of an embroidered title with the name of the colony or dominion (Australia, Nigeria, etc.).
Mervyn Mitton Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Trev - welcome to GMIC. I think Odulf has answered your question - even at 400 mag. I can't read the name on the cap tally - is it any clearer on the actual photograph ? Mervyn
trev from new zealan Posted November 28, 2012 Author Posted November 28, 2012 Unfortunately it is a very poor photo and even with magnification or putting in a photo programme and zooming in we can't see the cap tally. Thanks for your input. At least we have learned what a tally is. Trev
Simon F Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Remember that during the war, for security reasons a cap tally would just read a simple 'HMS' so as not to give ships names away. This may well have been a throw back into early post war.
