erichjr Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 Just picked up this medal, Looks like an old one, the only mark on it is on the broach marked sterling. Appears to have once had a gold wash on it. Its an MBE or OBE? Erich
Mervyn Mitton Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Erich - the MBE and the OBE are identical - apart from a light gilding on the OBE. This wears off very easily with rubbing - however, I can see traces of gold on the edges, so I think an OBE. The white line in the middle of the ribbon indicates a military award. The award is in silver - and at the top of the ribbon it is stamped 'sterling'. This is the 2nd issue - the first had the figure of Britania. These early ones were not given out with the frequency of today's awards. Hope this helps. Mervyn
paddywhack Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Can you post any of the sterling marks if there are any as that might be able to get you a rough date when it was made!
erichjr Posted March 7, 2013 Author Posted March 7, 2013 The only mark is on the broach, marked sterling. No other marks that i can find on the medal itself. Erich
