Chris Boonzaier Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 I picked up a small group to an Uffz in the 12th Bavarian nfantry regiment... Whats with the slide on blue boards? Are they for the blue tunic? if so, why slide ons?
Chris Boonzaier Posted March 15, 2013 Author Posted March 15, 2013 As the Blue Bavarian 12 regt Straps were red with a yellow 12... could this be post war... he seems to have served in the Abwicklungs stelle of the 12th regt into late 1920.....
Chris Boonzaier Posted March 15, 2013 Author Posted March 15, 2013 The Blue on the straps seem to correspond with the blue on the sleeve rings for the 1919 army... http://antique-photos.com/en/unidatabase/weimar-republic/69-2012-01-23-06-36-18.html
Chris Boonzaier Posted March 16, 2013 Author Posted March 16, 2013 So.... I have not been able to find the blue boards. The Reichswehr had different ones... Abouth the only solution i can find is that these are probably bavarian between the end of the war and the founding of the reichswehr? Maybe even just on regimental level? best Chris
Chris Boonzaier Posted March 17, 2013 Author Posted March 17, 2013 Another question... I seem to remember Chip saying the laschen were introduced around 1916? so they are very unlikely to be pre war?
Chip Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 Chris, Laschen were not introduced in 1916. That was the Schlaufen for the Bluse. The Laschen for the Bluse were introduced in order to roll the shoulder straps, not as a loop to put the Lasche through. I believe your dark blue straps with yellow "12" are for the old dark blue Bavarian Mantel. This was the pattern that proceeded the gray Mantel. Chip
Chris Boonzaier Posted March 22, 2013 Author Posted March 22, 2013 Hi, Would they not have to be red? He served 1913-1920 so would he have had a dark blue mantel? Thanks Chris
Chip Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 The old Bavarian Mantel took dark blue shoulder straps. The colored straps, as on the tunic, were used on the gray overcoat. It's quite possible that these dark blue coats were still in use in 1913, especially for reservists, etc.
Chris Boonzaier Posted March 24, 2013 Author Posted March 24, 2013 Hi, I dont exclude the possibility of the mantel, but these are more of a teal blue than the prewar blue. The teal blue is what the reichswehr had according to some superficial research. Also, he only entered service in 1913 as a young whippersnapper. Is anything known about bavarian uniforms between the end of the war and the time they joined the reichswehr? Best Chris P.S. I do realise they are boards he could have picked up "Along the way" but the group is really a time capsule group, down to the dust and moth eggs...
Chip Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Chris, I thought the army wore feldgrau after the war. and these appear to be too large for postwar straps. If they are a time capsule, then I would suspect that they are imperial as is everything else in the lot. Chip
Chris Boonzaier Posted March 26, 2013 Author Posted March 26, 2013 Hi, brain fart on my side... of course these are mantel straps... I should simply have looked at the size. Does anyone have pics of the mantel? The prewar one ? The straps are a definate grey blue as opposed to the waffenrock blue. best Chris
Chip Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 The only photo that I readily recall is in the book, "Lancers and Dragoons", by R.J. Marrion. It shows a group of Bavarian Chevaulegers, some of which are wearing the old dark blue overcoat. The straps appear to be a color other than dark blue, but they are cavalry and wore nothing on their colored boards in the way of numbers or insignia. I suspect cavalry units kept their tunic straps on these coats. Chip
Chris Boonzaier Posted October 24, 2014 Author Posted October 24, 2014 I think this may be the blue coat? Guy 3rd from the left
Chip Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 Chris, These are Litewka, not the overcoat I was referring to earlier. Normally, Litewka had the same straps as the Waffenrock. Chip
