Noor Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Hi all, I received today haul of ribbon bars for my collection, including two of the bars below. I checked my British ribbon charts and I am struggling to ID three ribbons on them. I am sure that the answer is something really simple, so hopefully someone here can help me. A. Two row bar (someone put numbers on the ribbons - can I wash them out?): 1. Defence Medal 2. War Medal 3. General Service Medal 1918-62 4. General Service Medal 1962 5. Army Long Service & Good Conduct Medal 6. ?????? (can it be India Independence Medal, but what it is doing then in the end of the British bar) 7. ?????? B. Three place bar: 1. British War Medal 2. Victory Medal 3. ???? (can it be British North Borneo Company's General Service Medal 1937-1941?)
paul wood Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Bottom one definitely North Borneo GSM 37-41, you can narrow it down to about 30-40 as most of the recipients were WWI veterans.Paul
Rayjin Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 On the two row bar, No 7 is Queens Medal for Champion Shot (RN/RM) Steve
paul wood Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 6 India Independence, 7 looks more like Queen's Medal For Champion Shot RAF (makes sense with the Indian Independence as many of the British recipients were RAF).Paul
Noor Posted October 21, 2013 Author Posted October 21, 2013 Thank you very much guys! Just to be sure, Paul are you saying that the Borneo award is so rare that it was probably awarded 30-40 times in total or combination as it is shown on this bar? Also first two row set bar looks like belonged to the man who was "loanded" to the Oman during 60-70s (Dhofar War)... perhaps RAF or even SAS man : 6. Oman, General Service Medal 1963. 7. Oman, Endurance Medal 1976 (Midal as-Sumood)
paul wood Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 44 of the Specialy valuable or Long and Meritorious Services British North Borneo Co's GSM were issued (+1 Gallantry (different riband)Paul
Noor Posted October 21, 2013 Author Posted October 21, 2013 Thank you! Found that input on Medal Yearbook as well finally. Oh, me and my eyesight :D
