mads0204 Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Hello, I have been asked by an elderly friend to ID a very old medal which belonged to her auntie whom had been given it by her husband upon his return from the War of Ypres, it is certainly not a campaign medal, I believe it is a silver Masonic Medal, I can find no inscription on it anywhere. Does anyone know what is it, she would be very grateful for any help given Many thanks Maria http://
at57 Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Hi Maria I can definitely confirm that the jewel is not Masonic. From the style and shape it is very similar to fraternal jewels worn by the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes (RAOB), Odd Fellows and some Temperance Orders. However, with the lack of symbolism on the jewel it is almost impossible to identify. Regards Andrew
mads0204 Posted November 14, 2013 Author Posted November 14, 2013 Thank you for your help Andrew. Maria
Mervyn Mitton Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 Whilst I agree with you that this has all the appearance of a Fraternal award - there is also the possibility that it is a WW1 Town or, City medal. These were awarded to the wounded and those invalided out. I mention this in order that all possibilities are considered. Mervyn
paul wood Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 That is possible Mervyn but one would expect some engraving on the reverse. The other possibility is that it could be a sports prize medal.Paul
Ulsterman Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 Actually, in the photo of Pvt. Brophy he is wearing a similar medal. it was identified as an " Army and Navy " medal. I think it might be Army Temperance Society.
