Tony Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 I've been going through some of my collection and have things I no longer know why or where I bought them. Today I found an EKII certificate, nothing special, just a standard vorlaeufiger ausweis but I was wondering if anyone might know where the following unit may have been in 1917. 2 battalion, 3 Bavarian Ersatz Inf. Regt. The certificate is dated 24/9/17 Was there a standard length of time between being recommended for the iron cross and receipt of a certificate? Thanks Tony
E Williams Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 (edited) 1917, part of the 9th Bavarian Res Div. sent to the Somme to reinforce the Saillisel and Transloy sectors in Jan 1917. It was sent back in Feb and returned to the Ville au Bois sector where it opened an offensive against the French in April and then to Lorraine from May to Aug.Aug it was in Flanders and then on to Ypres, then off back to Flanders to Ostend in Oct and Nov for rest. Tony Posted December 30, 2013 Author Posted December 30, 2013 Thanks for the quick reply. I've spent a lot of time walking around Sailly Saillisel (where I found many interesting bits and bobs in the fields) and Ypres. I wonder if the EK was awarded for an action during 3rd Ypres or Lorraine? I don't suppose I'll ever know.
Chris Boonzaier Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Hi, does the certificate specify the award date, or is that the date it was signed? (Or am I having problems seeing the doc??)
Chris Boonzaier Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Post a scan and lets see what we can do...
Tony Posted December 30, 2013 Author Posted December 30, 2013 Post a scan and lets see what we can do... Ok I'll get it posted before the end of the year. I also have one to a trench mortar bloke I think but I can't find it.
Tony Posted December 31, 2013 Author Posted December 31, 2013 No scanner I'm afraid and I need a new camera but I hope the pictures are ok. Tony
Chris Boonzaier Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 I Think we can safely assume that was the award date, and that it was for Flanders. Here is the battles he took part in. His bleeding on the battlefield was more from 'roids than shrapnel... but can hurt just as much I assume...
Tony Posted December 31, 2013 Author Posted December 31, 2013 Wow thanks! Where did you find that or do you have his soldbuch?
Chris Boonzaier Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Hi, On ancestry.com, they have the bavarian records. Best Chris
