Mervyn Mitton Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Steve (Pathfinder's Son) - welcome to GMIC. Your personal recollections add great interest to this progressive post and I know that many Members have been following with great interest. Spasm - you know perfectly well that you should be paying me ....................... This has been a most interesting and informative post - well done for starting it off and keeping the information coming-in. Jock - a little levity is a natural way to cover the emotions of some of these posts on brave men. Police will often make jokes when dealing with serious crimes - just to prevent being too emotional. Thankyou for those pictures. Mervyn

paul wood Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Here is Lawes' recommendationLawes, David Arthur, 574021 Flight Sergeant, No 83 SqnLG 15/8/1944 Sorties 43, Flying Hours 295.35. Flight Engineer Air2/9632"This N.C.O. has now completed 43 operational sorties as Flight Engineer, 28 of these being with the Pathfinder Force and including attacks on many of the enemy's most heavily defended targets. He has proved himself to be a capable and outstanding Flight Engineer who was cool and courageous in the face of enemy opposition. He has at all times displayed the utmost enthusiasm for operations and has set a high standard at both his work in the air and on the ground. For his praiseworthy example of devotion to duty he is strongly recommended for the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal." 21 May 1944Nice recommendation.Paul
Spasm Posted January 12, 2015 Author Posted January 12, 2015 Paul Yes, a nice commendation. Thanks for finding it. I'll let Steve know. Cheers
jamyam Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 You will be very lucky if you can find a citation in the PRO and RAF service records are only available to next of kin. The majority of DFMs were 'end of tour' recommendations (still very well earned!) rather than awards for a specific act of gallantry. Red log book entries refer to operational flights and it is only a coincidence that, on the pages shown, they also happen to be night flights.
Mervyn Mitton Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 Jamyam - welcome to GMIC. Thankyou for the information - this should be helpful to researchers. Mervyn
Spasm Posted January 21, 2015 Author Posted January 21, 2015 Jamyam Thanks for that, I'll have a chat with Pathfinder's son and let him know. Cheers
