steve edwards Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 I have a campaign medal 1877 8 79 in mint condition with ribbon. Some paper history. Would anyone have some idea of the value for insurance purposes. Thanks.
Brett Hendey Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 These medals vary in value from a few hundred GB pounds to many thousands. One sold within the last month for 40,000 GBP, a new record for a medal of its kind. You need to give details of the recipient, his regiment, and details of his service. Brett.
steve edwards Posted March 1, 2016 Author Posted March 1, 2016 Thank you Brett for replying so quickly. The medal belonged to 924 private David Rosser of the 2nd 24th foot.
paul wood Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 Steve Nice Regiment though not present at Rorkes Drift or Isandhlwana. but still should be worth upper hundreds of pounds. All the best, Paul
steve edwards Posted March 1, 2016 Author Posted March 1, 2016 Cheers Paul. Yes I think he was with Lord Chelmsford at the time of battles. Thinking of taking the medal to the museum at Brecon to see if they can shed some more light on it.
paul wood Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Steve, I wish you the best of luck with your enquiries, please post if you get any further information. Paul
Brett Hendey Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 (edited) Steve If he was indeed with Lord Chelmsford then it adds value to the medal. I have medals to men of three of the Colonial mounted regiments that went out on patrol under Major Dartnell in search of the Zulu army. I had to pay a premium to secure them. Dartnell's patrol was joined by Lord Chelmsford with Imperial infantry that might have included your man, so it will have a special appeal to some people. peter monahan Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 Sounds like a fairly special gong! Please do let us know what you find out at the museum, or elsewhere.
steve edwards Posted March 3, 2016 Author Posted March 3, 2016 Thank you gentlemen. I will indeed post my findings as soon as I have them. I will try to post some photos as well but as yet I am not sure how to do this!!!!.
