IrishGunner Posted August 4, 2018 Posted August 4, 2018 Just got this one in the mail. I haven't done much research yet. I am assume "Sturmbat." means battery (batterie) and not battalion. He was from Oberrammergau and is commemorated on the memorial there... 03.06.1918 Frankreich. He's buried in Kriegsgräberstätte in Loivre. Narrowing down the unit would help, as this was just before 2nd Marne, there could be an interesting story.
Chris Boonzaier Posted August 4, 2018 Posted August 4, 2018 Hi, he was with the Infanterie geschutz Batterie 24, Joined the army in Dec 16, was in a Gebirgs Arty Ersatz Battalion, then joined the 24th in September 17, Badly wounded on the 1.6, died on the 3.6.... born 16.4.98... very sparse record indeed!!
IrishGunner Posted August 4, 2018 Author Posted August 4, 2018 So, the bayer. 5. Sturmbat. is the 5. bayerisches Sturmbatallion with the Infanterie Geschutz Batterie 24 being a subordinate unit?
Chris Boonzaier Posted August 4, 2018 Posted August 4, 2018 I think the 5 Sturmbat was probably an error on the part of his parents when they ordered the card? They probably meant 15th
IrishGunner Posted August 4, 2018 Author Posted August 4, 2018 Thanks, Chris, that does make sense. Then Infanterie Geschutz Batterie 24 was subordinate to 15. Sturmbatallion? Can you tell me the source of your info (for my notes)?
Chris Boonzaier Posted August 4, 2018 Posted August 4, 2018 I do not have the breakdown of the 15th, but it is the only bavarian formation with a 5 in it ;-)
