frankguzzi Posted August 26, 2018 Posted August 26, 2018 Hello can anyone confirm the authenticity of this Odessa medal. It has lots of gilding on it as well as a soldered ring but it has aspects of version 2 on the Mondvor site. I do not know much about the Mondvor site but is it possible that the images on version 2 could have the soldered rings of version 1. There must have been a few factorys and stamps producing these medals which would allow for variations to the two shown on the Mondvor site. Thank you for your help. T.E.B. Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Reviving this old thread. IMO the odessa medal looks original to me. Would be nice with exact diameter. Br. Thomas
Wat05 Posted January 25 Posted January 25 (edited) It is not an original, I think. It looks like a Voenkomat medal that had the ear sawed off, and soldered to look like a war-time medal, thus more appealing to collectors. You can typically tell it is a Voenkomat by seeing the bubble that is visible between the sailors arm and back, which is a die-flaw seen only on the Voenkomat. Additionally, the reverse on these Defence medals of the Voenkomat variant are all the same. For the Voenkomat, if you look at ‘Д’ in ‘РОДИНУ’, you might see that the bottom stroke is slightly thicker towards the right, than on the left. On the war-time version, it was thinner and more even.
