Peninsular War veteran

Given the dates (1850-60) of the ambrotype in my posting about the unknown medal,

I've taken the decision to go for the Peninsular War. He's now propped up in the workshop/cave.

The medal is the British General service medal awarded from 1793,, the suspension device was sometimes quite loosly attached to the "Coin" so it would give the appearance of being off-centre when worn at an angle, a common thing with some british medals. image attached

Alex, thanks for that.

It seems to be the only choice as I really can't find a match with any other medal given the close up of the photo.  Which is why I went for the GSM in the painting.

Your guess was correct, judging by the number of campaign bars on the ribbon, he was a busy man!
