WRANGEL
Good evening Gentlemen, Ā I need your help to identify this button which I believe to be military (not necessarly for the 17th Lancers ?). Maker : FIRMINS, STRAND. LONDON. Ā Cheers Ā Bill
Farkas
Hi Bill, it may be a bit more interesting than expected...Ā i agree at first glance it seems a straightforward 17th Lancers but I cannot find one like this. Ā The 17th Lancers and, post 1922 I believe, The 17/21 Lancers button was like your example but not the same. š Ā You will notice āļø the skull and crossbones meet, this was the case with every example Iāve seen while looking so far today... Ā Not yoursĀ Ā It needs a little more investigation š Ā Cheers tony š»
Farkas
Ā Taken from www.jstor.org Ā āTheĀ 17thĀ Light Dragoons had been serving in India from 1808 , where it remained for fourteen years, embarking for home on 9th January,Ā 1823. During its stay in India the regiment had been converted into Lancers.1 Immediately on arriving in England the change from Light Dragoons toĀ LancersĀ was carried outā Ā 1823 was spent re-equipping the new lancers with officers first as they purchased their own uniforms. Ā The design on the back of the button dates toĀ ācirca 1925ā so in this case Iād say 1823. Ā I think the button youāve posted was an early officers private commission based on ša regular design for them at the time. Thereās no record of it I can find. Ā Ā A nice button indeedā¦ Ā cheers tony š»
