The Medal for Merit in the South African Prisons Service 3. The Medal for Faithful Service in the South African Prisons Service According to a former General of the SA Prisons Sevice, the late Gen Piet Frysen, only 7 bravery decorations were awarded. Awarded for conspicuous and exceptional gallantry, or acts in which a member of the Prison Service risked or lost his life attempting to save others. Awarded to a member of the SA Prisons Service who had, in the performance of his duties, rendered particularly, meritorious or exemplary service or distinguished himself by his ingenuity, efficiency or perserverance, or for a period of not less than 35 years meritorious service.
