    SOME ROMANIAN COMMUNIST PERIOD MEDALS.

    Recommended Posts

    Hallo Gentlemen

as a change from my normal posts I have decided to post some Romanian Communist Medals both Military and Civil, as time goes by I hope to add more.

Romanian Communist Medals can be found marked with the letters:

    R. P. R. which stands for: REPUBLICIA POPULARA ROMINA / the Peoples Republic of Romania.

    1947 - 1965.

    R. S. R. which stands for: REPUBLICIA SOCIALISTA ROMANIA / the Socialist Republic of Romania.

    1965 - 1989.

I obtained this medal on my second holiday visit to the town of Brad, Transylvania, Romania in 2001, it is for Military Service, upon closer examination of the medal box I discovered the soldier?s award card under the medal insert in the box. Funny thing is the soldier?s family name is Craciun which translates as Mr. Christmas!

    Socialist Republic of Romania.

VIRTUTEA OSTASEASCA Medal, Class 1. / Soldierly Virtue I Class.

    Conferred by the State Council.

Conferred by Decree Number. 717 on the 28. 07. 1967,

    On Comrade: Craciun P. Nicolae.

Signed for the Minister of the Armed Forces.

    Gl. Colonel. __________________________

REPUBLICIA SOCIALISTA ROMANIA / the Socialist Republic of Romania. 1965 - 1989.

50th Aniversary of the founding of the Romanian Communist Party

with ribbon device 1921 - 1971 PCR (Communist Party of Romania).

this falls into the cheap & nasty catagory, the front has a plastic cover under which the gold-gilt colour degrades to a very dark colour withtime.

Another point that must be noted with regard Romanian Medals and Insignia is the diverse groups that exsisted in the Country,

alongside the Army, Airforce, Navy etc, were the Militias, Factory Guards, Securitate, Patriotic Guards etc..

Very nice! Intersting stuff. Do you know what they did to get these medals awarded them?

    Hallo Ulsterman

The medal in the first Post is actually a Bravery Medal, but I dont know what he did to get it

EDIT: Seems it was awarded for long and good service.

The Anniversary medals for the Defeat of the Fascists probabaly are awarded to veterans of the War.

The Agricultural Medal was given for the development of the farming communes, of which there are higher grades.

The Anniversary of the Communist Party Medal obviously awarded to members both civil and military as it features on military bars.

I have contacted a local guy (by email) who collects Romanian awards and I asked him for some specifics.

Are groups of medals worn mounted together Soviet style too, or all individually? I'm wondering how they would "fit" together when they use different shaped suspensions.

    Nice ribbon bars too!

    Hallo Rick,

the attached photo is of a bar I was offered at in Brasov two years ago for 180 Euros, the seller afterwards sold it online to a compatriot for 100 US Dollars

It has a "soviet" style spange :P

I am also trying to verify if the "Civil" awards were actualy pinned under the medal bar, or if worn on the opposite pocket.

The medals on the bar are:

    Liberation from the Faschists Medal R. P. R. 1949.

    Military Merit / Service Medal, R. P. R. (with 10 yr ribbon.) *1954.

5th Annivesary of the Proclamation of the Romanian Peoples Republic Medal, R. P. R. 1952.

10 Years Since The Foundation Of The First Units of the Romanian Peoples Army Units Medal 1953.

    Victory Over Germany, Russian Medal.

    Czechoslovak War Cross (1939 - 1940).

(single white stripe denotes Gold Ist Class, the II Class ribbon for the silver medal has two thin white stripes. according to the lgaszewski site

REPUBLICIA POPULARA ROMINA / the Peoples Republic of Romania. 1947 - 1965.

ROMANIAN ORDER OF MILITARY MERIT. 1954

Obtained yesterday at a Collectors meeting in Brasov, Central Romania.

ORDINUL MERITUL MILITAR CL. I, II, III. :jumping::jumping::jumping:

    the difference in apperance being:

I Class, Gold wreath, Red enamel Star, words in Gold on Yellow background disc, Gold center motif,

II Class, Silver wreath, Red enamel Star, words in Silver on Yellow background, Silver center motif,

III Class, Bronze wreath, Red enamel Star, words in bronze on yellow background, Silver center motif.

All hang from a similar ribbon which appear to be original to the items, despite 3 classes of ribbons being denoted on the "lgaszewski website" as the first class having a single red stripe, second class with two red stripes and third class with three red stripes.

Also noted on the website was the following information:

    1. Until 1960s ribbons of Romanian orders and medals were 24-25 mm wide and folded pentagonally in the Russian manner. In 1960s the ribbons of new medals became straight, 35 mm in width. Still, when worn as ribbon bars only, there width was reduced to 24 mm as before.

    THE REAR.

THE CASES. The third class box is a different model to the I & II boxes being a darker colour, (it also appears the marking on the lid was a bit slap-dash as well) the hinge of the III class box is broken, its only cloth backed tape, and can be repaired.
