    Joe,

Nice one. I have one of these with a copper plated magnetic core that was thenn painted black. I think that they could be late war and made into the 30's, but who knows. Frankly I consider this a basic collection variation, but yours is in super nice shape. It would nice if someday, someone found a marked one so we would know who made the things though.

    Joe,

Here are two of mine. The flat copper cross has what I would call a standard type pin, so I'd guess at it being late war, maybe late 20s even whereas the convex brass (?) cross has a similar type of pin to your one. I'd agree with Dan that these were being produced into the 30s.

    Hi,

Joe, nice looking example but double check and make sure the core has not been repainted. The frames look worn but the black paint looks 100% - it's a bit unusual.

There are several variations of this type of cross. Almost all are vaulted though. The only markings I've seen are for silver (hard to find those ones!). Cores can be steel or non-ferrous. Frames can be silver, nickel-silver or silver-plated tombak. The catches can be "square"-wire or roundwire. Your example has a slightly different pin shape to Tony's example (which imo is the "classic" shape for this type of hinge).

    Regards

    mike-

    always interesting info!

in looking at the several crosses above,

all have some wear at the outer points of

each arm. tony's two have wear to the

crown. mine doesn't, but probably would

with a bit more wear by the recipient.

i've gone back and looked at it and

    don't think it's a repaint. i think it's been

well cared for and i was lucky enough

to find it after relatively little use.
