Christian Zulus Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 (edited) Unknown CSSR MedalGentlemen, yesterday Paul - GMIC-member "pmargulies" - visited me in Vienna and gave me that beautiful medal (cased in a nice box in burgundy-red), he bought recently in Bratislava, as a present:Does anyone know which medal this is ?It might be from the Slovakian part of the CSSR.Many thanks for your expertise .Best regards Christian Edited May 23, 2007 by Christian Zulus
Christian Zulus Posted May 20, 2007 Author Posted May 20, 2007 It is Czech, but I have no clue as to what it is.Dear Ulster, many thanks for your confirmation, that the medal is Czech .Also the dealer in Bratislava, where Paul bought the medal, had no idea, what the medal might be .Looking at the design of the medal, I assume, that it has to be issued in the 1980s or very late 1970s . Maybe that might be one of the last medals of communist CSSR ...Can anyone translate the Czech inscription at the av. ?Best regards Christian
Lukasz Gaszewski Posted May 21, 2007 Posted May 21, 2007 It is a medal of an exemplary worker of timber (as far as I can understand this Slovak inscription) industry of the Slovak Socialist Republic (being then a part of Czechoslovakaia). There were many such medals for good work in particular branches of national economy in Czechoslovakia at that time. I myself have a couple. Most had an interesting design. So does this one! I like it!Lukasz

Lukasz Gaszewski Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 OK, here are two other medals from the same stable. They are the Exemplary Worker (on the blue ribbon) and Meritorious Worker of Metal Industry (don't know which one is higher). Unlike the above, they were both federal awards, conferred by the Minister of Metallurgical, Electric and Engineering Industry. It can be interesting that despite being non-military awards, they were accompanied by a ribbon bar, apparently to be worn on civilian attire. Unfortunately I have only the bar from the Exemplary Worker decoration.Lukasz
Christian Zulus Posted May 22, 2007 Author Posted May 22, 2007 Dear Lukasz, many thanks for showing your beauties to us .I assume, that these special medals for workers had an important function (and high prestigue) in the former socialist Czech and Slovak Republics : Well made, nice design & ribbon bar.In the Soviet Union the title "Meritorious" ranked higher, than "Honoroued" or "Excellence"."Meritorious" had been top-titles with large leather-bound diplomas.I have in my collection a "Meritorious Pilot of the CCCP", but without any documents and also the later version without s/n. and pebbled rv. + Moscow mint-mark.The interesting point is, that the CSSR used the form & design of "normal" medals for honouring their workers .Best regards Christian
