Guest Rick Research Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 I thought we HAD a thread on these war donation tokens, but in any "search pattern" I can think of, I get "for first 1,000 results" and 26 pages, none of which have anything to do with these. If somebody can find a thread on these already existing, bring it up and I'll combine this into that.Just got this version in a cigarette tin. The medallion is 40mm wide and 2mm thick. [attachmentid=40059]The offering female figure is in high enough relief that these could not have stacked without falling over.
Guest Rick Research Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 Nice variety! I note the exact same 1916 slogan-- did that vary year by year I wonder?
joe campbell Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 a nice variation on a theme...this lady probably had beaucoup bucks tofirst turn in her gold, and then have itmade into a brooch using what i think isvery high content silver, tarnished towithin an inch of its life...obverse.
joe campbell Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 reverse.really nice quality workmanship.hope you likee!joe
Bob Hunter Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 In which war did the "gold for iron" appeal begin?
Guest Rick Research Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 That's really neat, Joe!!! It's a wonder she didn't have here iron medal... gold plated! I've seen various certificates over the years listing a specific quantity of gold turned in... I wonder if those were "award documents" for THIS or some other semi-official token? Anybody got any paperwork? Are there other types of cast iron medallions out there, or is Joe's and mine the "government issue?"
Tom Y Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 This is an odd one. The chain is about 3 feet doubled and the button is a slider. Maybe for a monocle or pince nez?Maybe tomorrow I'll be able to dig out my American made rings.
Guest Rick Research Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 I'd say that is definitely a waist chain for a lady's chatelaine: hanging her household keys etc etc off the clip end.
