Tony Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Here are a couple of photos I picked up the other day showing the various ways a newly awarded cross was worn. The pickelhaube photo doesn’t give away any unit, the writer just says Easter wasn’t good and he hopes the war is over soon. The photo was taken just behind the front in Russia and is dated April 1917, I didn’t know the pickelhaube was still in use at that stage in the war. Unfortunately there’s no date for the steel helmet photo, I wonder what they did to receive the cross, a trench raid perhaps? The sailor possibly received his cross for the battle of Dogger Bank, 24/1/15. The battle cruiser SMS Seydlitz lost 192 men at Dogger Bank.
Brian R Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 These are, indeed, great photos. The first photo appears to show the pickelhaube in wear but without the spikes.
GreyC Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 Hi, the German writing on the middle photo means "Grandpa" in English, the writing on the sailor photo says "Two friends 17th March 1???". GreyC
