Hiya, Although Angola is not my field of collecting, here are some observations. Medal 1 is the 1949-71 version. Text on front = different than on the next 2. Medal 2 and 3 are the 1971-2002 versions. Also, note the different loops at top of medal. As with many long running medals there can be different manufacturers which might explain the differences. As for the ribbon, it should be red-green-red, but the red-white-red could be a variation denoting different branch of the armed forces. For these please ask someone with more knowledge concerning Portuguese medals/ribbons. Regards, Marcon1.

Hiya, As a user of plastic flips for my medals I think it has to do with condition. If you have coins which are UNC or even PROOF, you want to keep them that way. Any loss of condition due to storage will mean loss of value with coins. With medals it is less the condition (although we all want the best condition possible) but the story behind the medals (i.e. the man/woman who received it, the action for it and the rest of it's history). I've noticed that silver medals do start to have a green hue when stored in plastic flips. But a soft wipe with silver polish removes that without damaging the medal. Regards, Marcon1.

(MYB: 290 & 291 & SA-52) Faithful Service Medal of the Prisons Department (1922-1968) Originally (1922-59) called the "Prisons Good Service Medal". Awarded to chief warders, head warders, and warders, for (i) particularly gallant or distinguished service, or (ii) 18 years irreproachable service. A clasp was added if the medal was awarded for bravery. The majority of the medals were granted for long service. Insignia: A circular silver medal displaying the national coat of arms (obverse) and a reverse inscription which varied over the years: "For Faithful Service - Voor Trouwe Dienst" (1922-59), or " Vir Troue Diens - For Faithful Service " (1959-65), or " Voor Troue Diens - For Faithful Service" (1965-68). Insignia: A circular silver medal displaying the national coat of arms and the name of the department (obverse) and a reverse inscription which varied over the years: "For Faithful Service - Voor Trouwe Dienst" (1922-32), or "For Faithful Service - Vir Troue Diens" (1932-59), or "Vir Troue Diens - For Faithful Service" (1959-68). (Type: 1) (Type: 2) (Type: 3) Specific date instituted is unknown, but between 1951 - 1952 according to a former General. Not much information available, but awarded to prison officers in recognition of 18 years of exemplary service. A "MERIT" clasp was awarded with the Medal to denote awards made in recognition of exceptionally meritorious service or acts of gallantry. Regards, Marcon1.

Hiya, The crow's foot (arrow) usually means military issue and the year 1943 would place it right in the 2nd. World War. Could this therefor be for the Military Police or EVEN for use at allied landings (i.e. D-Day???) ? The better informed among our forum members might be able to tell for sure. Regards, Marcon1. An original 1943 dated officer's pattern whistle as used throughout the Second World War.

Hiya, A complete original set may not be possible as some (rare awards) may never have been issued and the only way to get a complete set is a collectors set. But I wish you well for your hunt of the originals (they will cost you a nice amount of money, I'm afraid to say). Regards, Marcon1.

Hi Megan, You may have stumbled onto an enigma. I've looked at the pictures in my info files and spend about an hour on the internet looking for this medal with FAITHFUL SERVICE TROUE DIENS on the back. No such luck, all had VERDIENSTE MERIT on it !! So either they are as rare as hens teeth, or the information is wrong and they are all VERDIENSTE MERIT as can be seen in the picture above posted by Archie on may 19. The only difference is the metal - gilt and silver. Marcon1.

Nice one Megan, just 'nicked' your picture for my own info listings. Had a picture of this medal but with the wrong ribbon. Thank you, Marcon1.

Hi Archie, medals.org.uk Things might confuse you a bit as she has everything under the heading South Africa. Would be better if she listed the homelands under their own names. Regards, Marco.

Hiya, I've corrected the listing + ribbon colours. The light blue ones were from the listing from Arthur Radburn. Megan tearing her hairs out, I'm getting a headache - hopefully everything is correct now. Regards, Marcon1.
