Order of Ramatseatsane Also known as the 'Distinguished Service Order' Instituted in 1972, and awarded for meritorious conduct in the service of the country by members of the armed forces and police in 3 classes (Knight Commander, Commander and Officer). Here is the Officer:

Most Courteous Order of Lesotho Instituted in 1972, and awarded for meritorious service by citizens of Lesotho and by foreigners in 3 classes (Grand Commander, Commander and Officer). This is the original 1972 design, the Lesotho government has a bit of a tendency to fiddle with designs so it may well not be the current one. Anyone know? This is the Grand Commander badge:

Several companies - Spinks and Bertrand to name a couple - advertise that they provide a design and manufacture service. So some jeweller somewhere is responsible for creating the design, probably to a design brief and certainly with the customer country's approval. A master goldsmith of my acquaintance has sent some glorious pictures of orders that he has made... although I don't know if he came up with the original designs.
    4. Quite right about the collar being of the 1st Type, Emmanuel - that's what the kind soul who sent the picture (Dragomir: thank you!!!!) said.
    5. Order of Mubarak the Great Wisam al-Mubarak al-Kabir Instituted 16 July 1974, and awarded to Heads of State and Royalty, in 2 classes - Collar and Grand Cordon. Here's the Collar:

Medal of War 1978-79 Nishani ya Vita Awarded for service in the war with Uganda, that culminated in the fall of Idi Amin. Obverse: The reverse is blank. This is one of the most widely-awarded Tanzanian medals... possibly due to the fact that it is cheap to manufacture, whereas many of the others have enamel and so are expensive for what is a poor nation to have manufactured!
    13. Always a relief as term approaches to discover that I haven't lost the art of explaining....
    14. They receive whatever regalia is appropriate... sometimes a foreigner is given an honorary knighthood within one of the orders, so the appropriate badge & star, or if they have just received a knighthood, the insignia being discussed in this thread.

Medal of Unification Nishani ya Muungano Awarded to mark the union between Tanganyka and Zanzibar on 26 April 1964 that formed Tanzania. Like many Tanzanian medals, it comes in army, police and prison service versions, there's also a civilian version for this medal. Here is the police one (blue ribbon):
    16. Here's the neck badge: The ribbon is one of those few that you are NOT permitted to wear in uniform, although the badge may be worn on those occasions when it is appropriate to turn out with all your medals on.

Medal of Long Service Nishani ya Utumishi Mrefu This is the Prison Service version (green ribbon) - it also comes for the Army (red ribbon) & Police (blue ribbon) but the medal stays the same!

Medal of Long Service & Good Conduct Nishani ya Utumishi Mrefu na Tabia Njema I think this is the same irrespective of branch of service, unlike most Tanzanian awards.

I shall try to catch some of our African-heritage students when they come back to college mid-September (term for 2nd years starts on the 14th...). I'm not sure which languages they all speak but someone might know Swahili although they mostly speak Zulu and what they call 'Zimbabwean.'

      Djibouti

I appreciate everyone's efforts to expand my knowledge. I found the official Djibouti online legal database, which is in French - I speak it fluently but have to work at reading it! - and its search facility is not very good. But as Emmanuel says, what has been legislated is not always quite what happens once the award actually gets made and given out. As an example, there was a discussion recently on the OMSA site about a growing tendency for senior officers awarding medals which are worn on the breast according to regulation suspended on any old length of neck ribbon (often not even the right ribbon). We concluded that they either didn't like fiddling around pinning medals on chests or just thought that hanging something round the neck, sports medal style, made for a better photo opportunity!!! But to those who did not know that the medal should be worn on the chest, the photos from the award ceremony would give incorrect information, especially if you didn't have access to a picture of the recipient wearing the award correctly on his uniform under normal circumstances.
    24. Where did you find that, François? I've been looking for a good picture of the star for ages...
